Gun control and crime prevention
This week the US Supreme Court ruled against the handgun ban of District of Colombia (DC). DC has the most strict gun control laws in the US; a complete ban on handguns. The second amendment of the constitution of the US states that individuals have the right to own a gun for personal use (self defense). Although some interpret the Second Amendment as the right for individuals that are part of a militia (such as National Guard) to own weapons, the Supreme Court was clear on the issue; individuals have the right to own fire arms.
The Supreme Court also said that DC’s requirement that lawful weapons be disassembled or limited by trigger locks was unconstitutional because it made them virtually useless.
The question is: do gun control laws save lifes and reduce crime ?
